Frequently Asked Questions
An “IBS” diagnosis (meaning your stomach is acting “irritable” – nothing you didn’t know already!) doesn’t mean much to me. All it tells me is that something is “off” with your digestion, and that we need to identify it and try to fix it. Causes can range from inadequate digestive enzyme or acid function, constipation backlog causing bloat/discomfort/pain and reflux, or even a condition called SIBO, where excess bacteria in the gut causes severe gas and GI symptoms.
Because IBS can encompass such a varied umbrella of underlying issues, each case is unique and will require specific targeted interventions. Although all of the above examples will be lumped under the same “IBS” diagnosis, from a functional medicine perspective, they are all different and will require different interventions. At your initial visit, I will try hypothesize what is at the root of your specific IBS issue, and then educate you practically on how we will fix it. For example, if SIBO is determined to be your root issue, I will teach you how to test for and/or treat it, follow it with a 4 week special diet, and how to eat to prevent it from coming back. If constipation is at the root, we will focus heavily on supplements, the right fibers for you to eat, and occasional short term laxative use for intestinal muscle re-tone to get your frozen intestine moving again. We take the approach of most likely scenario first, and if that doesn’t achieve our desired outcome, we will move on to plan B at your second session.
I utilize a "high value" type of model, where a lot of education and recommendations are provided at each session, with fewer total visits than most providers. On average IBS cases can expect to need 3-4 sessions in total, conducted every 2-4 weeks.
As detailed above, because IBS is so broad and case specific, dietary interventions will vary. They range from low FODMAP to high fiber, to high in soluble fiber/ low in insoluble fiber and cooked/softer. Whatever the approach that I determine is likely best for you, you will be educated on what it entails, with a simple practical menu list of meals and snacks that work for you.
VERY importantly: Almost all IBS diets are designed to be short term to manage symptoms while we work to improve overall digestive function so they are no longer necessary in the future. Strengthening your overall gut health through by improving your microbiome (gut bacteria balance and variety) and increasing your “digestive fire” pancreatic enzymes and acids often resolves the underlying of a lot of digestive difficulties and “IBS” diagnoses.
I strive to price my services fairly — making them accessible to most individuals while allowing me the time needed to invest intensively in each case to drive real results. Functional Medicine naturally costs more than traditional, insurance-based services for a reason: it demands extensive provider expertise, advanced training, significant time commitment, continuous education, and is still not widely available.
Unlike many Functional Medicine practitioners who require numerous ongoing sessions, my goal is to help the majority of clients within just two to four total sessions, depending on your diagnosis and condition. Typically, the combined cost of these 2–4 sessions, along with recommended supplements, averages around $1000 - $1,500 over the course of 4–6 months.
While many providers order thousands of dollars’ worth of testing, I have learned — through years of experience — how to streamline the process and achieve similar results without unnecessary expenses. After working with so many individuals over the years, I firmly believe that healing the body through a Functional Medicine approach is a one-time investment for a lifetime of better health.
There is no price tag on feeling good and living well.
Moreover, many clients find that their investment comes back to them — often in the form of lower medical bills, fewer medications, and fewer missed workdays. From the IBS or Crohn’s client who can finally get to work on time and engage fully in life, to the IVF client who requires fewer retrievals, the PCOS client who conceives naturally, or the rheumatoid arthritis or colitis patient who reverses disease activity and reduces medication — the financial (and personal) payoff is undeniable.
